Snowstorm

Baikal · 2018

From the series “Breath of Ice”, No. 18

Looking out of the window that morning, I realised there was no point hoping for a good sunrise: a fierce blizzard hid everything from view. But this was exactly what I had come to Baikal for, once again. Instead of a beautiful sunrise, nature showed me something that is not all that common here. The gusts were so strong that one of them nearly carried off my backpack of camera gear. Little wonder: the sarma is one of the most powerful winds on Baikal, with gusts that can sometimes reach 40 m/s.

Photographed on 28 January 2018, Ogoy Island, Lake Baikal.
